Viral Fever: When is it Urgent to be Cautious?

Winter has passed months ago and the hot days are here. During this transition of seasons in Bangladesh, viral fever is now spreading in almost every household. The fluctuations in humidity and temperature caused by changing weather create an ideal environment for viruses to thrive and spread. While most fever bids adieu within a few days, certain symptoms should never be neglected.

Dr. Meenakshi Jain, a specialist at Delhi Max Hospital, explains that this fever is typically caused by influenza or rhinoviruses. The primary symptoms include a sudden fever with chills, headaches, body aches, fatigue, and a cold or cough. Children and the elderly may also experience a loss of appetite. Generally, the illness is most distressing around the second or third day, with recovery usually occurring within a week.

While most viral fevers are common, you should consult a doctor immediately if the following symptoms are present:
If the fever rises above 103°F and does not subside within three days.

If the fever cannot be controlled even after taking paracetamol.

If there is severe shortness of breath or chest pain.

If there is persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration (such as a dry mouth).

The appearance of skin rashes or a stiff neck.

If young children become unusually lethargic or refuse to eat at all.

According to physicians, respiratory distress or severe dehydration can sometimes lead to more serious complications like pneumonia.

Home care and treatment are very common for managing this fever. Therefore, if someone is suffering from viral fever, it is essential to keep the following points in mind:

Drink Plenty of Fluids

During a fever, the body loses fluids, so it is essential to drink plenty of water, fruit juices, coconut water, or Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS).

Rest and Nutrition

Get adequate rest and eat nutritious foods that are easy to digest.

Sponging

If the fever is very high, repeatedly wipe the entire body with lukewarm or room-temperature water.

Isolation

Since viral fever is contagious, it is best to stay isolated from other family members and keep personal items separate.

To prevent viral fever, experts recommend using a mask when going outside, washing hands regularly with soap, and consuming fruits rich in Vitamin C, such as lemons and oranges. Additionally, for those already suffering from other chronic illnesses, it is safer to get a flu vaccine under a doctor's guidance.

Remember, simple awareness can keep you and your family safe from these seasonal illnesses.
