The body of a University of Chittagong (CU) student who went missing after stepping into the Karnaphuli River in Kaptai, Rangamati, has been recovered.
The body was recovered from the Pathorghata area of Sitaghat around 4:40pm on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Sajid Shahriar Sanam, 24. He was a final-year student of the 2020–21 academic session in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Chittagong. He was the son of Nasir Uddin of Raipura upazila in Narsingdi.
According to locals and eyewitnesses, a group of nine tourists from Narsingdi and Dhaka arrived in Kaptai on Sunday morning. They later went trekking in Sita Hill with a local guide. After exploring the hills, they went down to the Karnaphuli River near Pathorghata in Sitaghat around noon to wash their hands and faces. Sanam was swept into deeper water by the current and drowned. His friends who were with him tried to rescue him but were unsuccessful.
After receiving the news, police from Kaptai Police Station and a Fire Service diving team arrived at the scene and began a rescue operation. A Navy diving team later joined the search.
Confirming the death, Kaptai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan said the body had been recovered. He said Navy and Fire Service divers had been involved in the recovery operation and the body of the missing student was retrieved around 4:40pm.
Earlier, Sanam’s friend Saiful Islam said that the nine friends had climbed Sita Hill in the morning. After their trip to the hills, they went down to the riverbank to wash their hands and faces, and Sanam disappeared into the water moments later.
