Among the country's service sectors, the passport office is the most corrupt. Nearly 84.4 percent of people seeking services at this institution are forced to pay extra money or bribes outside the official rules.
This information has emerged in a new national household survey report by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB). The report was published today, Thursday, through a press conference.
Not just the passport office, but corruption is also rampant in other important service sectors related to daily commuting and civil rights of ordinary people. Immediately after the passport office in terms of collecting bribes is the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).
The report says that 79 percent of service recipients at BRTA, 71 percent of people in judicial-related services, and 66.3 percent of people had to pay bribes for land services.
The report further states that people in the country had to pay the highest amount of bribes at the passport office. Some 84.4 percent of people have to pay bribes at this government institution.
TIB stated that this report is based on a nationwide survey conducted from November 2024 to October 2025. The household survey has examined in detail how ordinary citizens face institutional and structural corruption while seeking various government services.
The report recommends ensuring transparency and accountability in the relevant sectors, as well as expanding the scope of digital services to reduce the dominance of middlemen or brokers.
TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman was present at the report presentation event.
