To make social safety programmes more effective and people-oriented, the government is planning major reforms, including large-scale expansion of the healthcare workforce.
As part of the initiative, 100,000 new healthcare workers will be recruited across the country, with 80 percent of them expected to be women. At the same time, the plan includes establishing primary healthcare centres in every union and one or more centres in each urban ward, which is expected to significantly expand access to basic healthcare services.
Dr. Manjur Hossain, Member (Secretary) of the General Economics Division (GED) of the Planning Commission, said the proposals are aimed at strengthening the social safety net system. He noted that these ideas have been taken from the government’s election manifesto and were presented at the first meeting of the advisory committee, as they will need a clear implementation framework in the upcoming strategic plan.
He added that the government is also considering introducing additional programmes, all of which will focus on ensuring real benefits for people through practical and realistic planning.
