Selina Hayat Ivy, the former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation and the former senior vice president of the District Awami League, appeared in court over charges of vandalizing a police vehicle.

Following the hearing, the court granted her application for exemption from personal appearances.

On Tuesday, she appeared before the court of Narayanganj Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Nurul Huda Chowdhury. Awlad Hossain represented her during the hearing.

Awlad said the application for exemption from personal appearance was filed under Section 205 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The court was informed that Ivy had been imprisoned for a long period and is ill.

Considering these factors, permission was sought for her to appear through her lawyer instead.

He informed that the court granted the application after a full hearing. As a result, her lawyer will be able to appear in court on her behalf until the case’s charge sheet is submitted and transferred to the trial court.

However, she must be present in court once the trial begins and during the recording of testimony.

Ivy said, “I am innocent, yet I am being treated like a criminal. I have always protested against murder and oppression in Narayanganj. Today, I am the one being made into a criminal.”

After making these remarks, she left the court premises for her residence in Deobhog. From the morning, her followers and activists were present in the court area. To prevent any potential chaos, additional law enforcement personnel were deployed in the court vicinity.

On 9 May 2025, Ivy was arrested from her residence in connection with a murder case filed during the anti-discrimination movement. Later, she was also named as an accused in a case involving the vandalism of a police vehicle, which was filed following an attack on the vehicle used during her arrest.

Then she was shown arrested in 12 more cases involving allegations of murder and attempted murder. On 4 June, she was released on bail after being imprisoned for 391 days in the Kashimpur Central Women’s Jail in Gazipur.
