Barrister Tawfique Nawaz, husband of former Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni, has passed away. Following her husband's death, his daughter Tani Deepavali Nawaz has applied for Dipu Moni's release on parole from Munshiganj jail.
She submitted the application today (Wednesday) afternoon at the office of the Munshiganj District Commissioner.
Earlier, around 12 noon, Tani Deepavali visited her mother in jail.
Sheikh Md. Rezaul Karim, Additional District Commissioner (General) of Munshiganj, said that in response to the application, Dipu Moni will be released on parole.
Awami League leader and former minister Dipu Moni was arrested after the July uprising and is currently detained in Munshiganj jail in connection with various cases.
Her husband, Supreme Court lawyer Tawfique Nawaz, passed away on Tuesday night at Continental Hospital (formerly United Hospital) in Dhaka.
By profession a Supreme Court lawyer, Tawfique Nawaz also practiced classical music. He had suffered a stroke in 2019. Most recently, on May 27, relatives had brought him to a court in a wheelchair to meet his imprisoned wife.
Although Dipu Moni has secured bail in several High Court cases, she has not been released due to her involvement in many other cases. She faces numerous cases across Dhaka and Munshiganj.
On May 27, citing Tawfiq Nawaz's illness, their daughter Tani Deepavali Nawaz had applied for a seven-day parole for Dipu Moni. However, that application submitted to the Munshiganj District Commissioner did not receive any response later.
