Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the current government will not tolerate extremism and radicalism under any circumstances. He also reiterated the government’s tough stance on controlling corruption.
He made the remarks on Wednesday during his concluding speech at the budget session of the Jatiya Sangsad.
Speaking about controlling corruption in his closing remarks, Tarique Rahman said that during the period of autocratic rule, $16 billion was siphoned out of the country every year through corruption. He said corruption is one of the main causes of all problems. The current government is determined to control corruption “whether by tying its hands or by squeezing its throat.”
Emphasizing the need to maintain national unity at any cost, the prime minister said, “There will be differences of opinion, but certainly not hostility. Instead of vengeance and retaliation, there will be justice. On the question of ensuring that Bangladesh never again falls into the grip of fascism and autocracy, we, both the opposition and the ruling party in Parliament, firmly believe that the national unity that exists among us will be maintained.”
