Nearly 4,800 illegal intruders have already been sent back to Bangladesh from holding centers set up in border districts of West Bengal, India. Another 836 individuals are currently awaiting deportation, according to claims made by BJP leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Speaking at a preparatory meeting for a BJP training camp on Sunday, he said preventing illegal infiltration and strengthening the India-Bangladesh border remain key priorities for the government.
He claimed that long-term infiltration through the border has significantly altered the state’s demographic composition and has become a politically sensitive issue.
The BJP leader also said the state government has already handed over necessary land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for fencing along the border. According to him, out of the remaining 556 kilometers of unfenced border, land for around 100 kilometers has already been transferred. He added that special priority has been given to the ‘Chicken’s Neck’ corridor in North Bengal.
He further claimed that holding centers set up in border districts are being used to detain Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in India. After identity and citizenship verification, they are being deported to their respective countries through legal procedures.
Tensions between India and Bangladesh have recently increased over issues of border pushbacks and infiltration. In this context, Suvendu Adhikari said the administration must further strengthen measures to deal with illegal entry.
He said securing the border and preventing infiltration are crucial for the state’s security.
However, some human rights organizations in West Bengal have alleged that pushbacks are being carried out without proper verification in many cases, leading to harassment of genuine Indian citizens, particularly members of the Muslim minority community.
