The cost of the war against Iran for the United States has reached $25 billion so far. A senior Pentagon official shared this on Wednesday, marking the first official estimate of the conflict's expenses.
With only six months left until the midterm elections, Donald Trump's Republicans are facing a challenge in maintaining their majority in the House of Representatives, while Democrats are leading in public opinion polls. Democrats are attempting to link the unpopular Iran war to the rising cost of living.
Jules Hurst, the Pentagon's acting comptroller, told the House Armed Services Committee that the majority of these costs have been spent on ammunition.
However, he did not clarify exactly what is included in this calculation or whether it accounts for the potential costs of rebuilding and repairing military bases damaged by the war in the Middle East.
Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the committee, remarked, "I am glad this question is being answered. We have been asking for this figure for a long time, but no one provided it."
The United States launched attacks against Iran on February 28, and a fragile ceasefire is currently being maintained between the two sides. The Pentagon has deployed thousands of additional troops to the Middle East, including three aircraft carriers.
So far, 13 American soldiers have been killed and over a hundred have been injured in this conflict.
Since the start of the war, disruptions in oil and gas supplies have driven up fuel prices in the US. Additionally, the prices of agricultural products, including fertilizer, have increased, putting further pressure on already high consumer prices.
Donald Trump's popularity has declined since the beginning of the Iran war. A recent poll shows that only 34% of Americans support the war, down from 36% in mid-April and 38% in March.
