Mexico City Stadium erupted in celebration as Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0, cruising into the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
Despite an hour-long weather delay, Javier Aguirre’s men dominated the pitch from the opening whistle. After early near-misses by Gilberto Mora and Luis Romo, Julian Quinones broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute.
Roberto Alvarado delivered a precise ball from his own half, allowing Quinones to sprint clear and unleash a thunderous strike past Hernan Galindez.
The momentum stayed firmly with El Tri. In the 31st minute, Quinones turned provider, setting up Raul Jimenez to double the advantage.
This victory mirrors Mexico’s 2002 triumph over Ecuador, which remains their only other World Cup win against South American opponents - coincidentally achieved under Aguirre's leadership as well.
Mexico’s defense remained impenetrable throughout the match. Cesar Montes and Johan Vasquez anchored the backline expertly, while goalkeeper Raul Rangel secured his fourth consecutive clean sheet.
Frustration boiled over for Ecuador late in stoppage time when Piero Hincapie received a red card following an exchange with Santiago Gimenez. Mexico returns to this venue on 5 July to face the winner of the England and Congo DR clash.
