Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called for ensuring the recruitment of teachers by prioritizing merit and academic qualifications above all else.
He made these remarks in a message issued on the occasion of the 106th founding anniversary of University of Dhaka (DU). In another message released on Tuesday night, Tarique also emphasized the necessity of strengthening the culture of research within the university.
Highlighting the institution’s legacy, he said, “Since its establishment in 1921, DU has played a significant role in higher education, research, and democratic movements.”
Tarique recalled the historic contributions of the university’s students in various struggles, including the Language Movement and the Liberation War.
Addressing the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the PM mentioned the vital need to modernize the educational curriculum. He stressed the inclusion of technology-dependent subjects such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cyber Security, and Programming, while highlighting the importance of gaining practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge.
The message noted that coordination between the university and the industrial sector must be increased to bolster internship and research activities. Tarique added that there are significant opportunities to advance research and innovation through the active involvement of alumni.
He also placed importance on culture, sports, and moral education for the multidimensional development of students. Tarique expressed his hope that the university would continue to play a pioneering role in developing future generations as skilled human resources.
