France showcased an attacking masterclass at New York New Jersey Stadium, dismantling Sweden 3-0 to clinch their place in the Round of 16.
Kylian Mbappe delivered a historic performance, netting twice to reach 18 career World Cup goals. This feat elevates him to second place on the all-time scoring list, surpassing Miroslav Klose and trailing Lionel Messi by just one goal.
The Les Bleus offense remained relentless throughout a scintillating first half, recording 15 attempts on goal. Michael Olise nearly opened the scoring with a spectacular overhead kick that rattled the frame, while Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 45th minute with a ferocious drive.
The pressure continued after the restart. Bradley Barcola extended the lead in the 53rd minute, providing an emphatic finish to an Olise assist.
Although Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom made several key saves, he could not stop Mbappe from completing his brace in the 74th minute. This strike marked the captain’s sixth goal of the 2026 tournament.
France carries a perfect record into the knockout stage. They face Paraguay at Philadelphia Stadium on 4 July, where Mbappe will have the opportunity to further his record-breaking haul.
