Morocco have suffered a double setback ahead of the World Cup, forcing the African side to make changes to their squad before the tournament begins. Coach Mohamed Wahbi has brought in two new players ahead of their opening match against Brazil.
Winger Abdessamad Ezzalzouli and defender Nayef Aguerd have both been ruled out before the start of the tournament. Real Betis forward Ezzalzouli picked up a knee injury during a friendly against Norway last week. He has been replaced in the squad by Angers winger Amine Sabai.
Meanwhile, Marseille center-back Aguerd has not featured since March following thigh surgery, and Morocco decided not to take any risk with his fitness. He has been replaced by Marwane Sadan.
Morocco’s team management declined to comment on the changes. However, captain Achraf Hakimi expressed sympathy for the injured players in a social media post.
The PSG star wrote, “Football can sometimes be cruel. Thank you for everything you have given the team from day one. We will all fight for you. We love you.”
Morocco will face Brazil in their opening Group C match on June 14.
