The prospects of resuming the popular Bangladesh-India Maitree Express, which has been suspended for nearly two years, have significantly strengthened. Dhaka has officially requested the resumption of this cross-border train service. Following the application, India’s Ministry of Railways and Ministry of External Affairs are actively considering the matter, and Indian sources indicate that directives have already been issued to begin the necessary preparations.
Cross-border rail services, including the Dhaka-Kolkata Maitree Express, Khulna-Kolkata Bandhan Express, and New Jalpaiguri-Dhaka Mitali Express, were suspended indefinitely on July 19, 2024, due to political unrest in Bangladesh. Despite a long period of time passing, services had not yet returned to normal.
Recently, a formal request was sent to the Indian Ministry of Railways through the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. The proposal suggests resuming the Maitree Express five days a week, just as before. The Traffic Transport Department of the Indian Railways Ministry has sent instructions to relevant departments to begin preparations. In tandem, all aspects regarding security, immigration, customs, and health checks are being scrutinized. A final decision to launch the service will be made once a green signal is received.
India has already resumed issuing various types of visas for Bangladeshi citizens, including tourist visas. According to diplomatic circles, the initiative to normalize rail communication following that decision could further advance relations between the two countries. The Maitree Express has long been the most affordable and convenient mode of transport for thousands of people traveling for medical treatment, business, education, and family reasons.
However, a specific date for the resumption of the train service has not yet been announced. Sources noted that an official announcement will be made through a joint decision by both countries once all security and administrative processes are finalized.
According to rail expert Tapan Kundu, the Maitree Express is not just a train, but a vital bridge for communication, culture, and family ties between the people of India and Bangladesh. Therefore, resuming the service will not only make travel easier for ordinary citizens of both nations but will also have a positive impact on tourism and the economy of the border regions. However, he emphasized that the service should commence only after ensuring proper security and diplomatic coordination.
