Lightning Kills 8 More Today, 22 Deaths in Two Days

At least eight people were killed in lightning strikes across various districts of the country in a single day. These incidents occurred between Monday morning and afternoon in Sunamganj, Habiganj, Netrokona, and Noakhali. On the previous day, Sunday, 14 more people died due to lightning strikes in different districts, bringing the total death toll to 22 in just two days.
According to reports sent by our district correspondents:
Three Dead in Sunamganj
Three farmers were killed and three others injured by lightning while harvesting paddy in the haors (wetlands) of Sunamganj. These casualties occurred in separate locations across the district on Monday afternoon.
It was reported that Jamir Hossain (42) of Baithakhali village in Gourarang Union and Jamir Uddin (46) of Abdullapur village in Mollapara Union died while harvesting paddy in the haor. Simultaneously, another farmer named Abu Saleh (22) from Noagaon village in Jamalganj Upazila died in a lightning strike at a different spot in the Sadar Upazila haor.
Additionally, three other farmers were injured by lightning while harvesting paddy in the Shantiganj Upazila haor. They are reportedly receiving local medical treatment.
Three Lives Lost in Netrokona
A fisherman and two farmers died in three separate lightning strikes in the Khaliajuri Upazila of Netrokona.
A fisherman named Abdul Motaleb (55) died while fishing in the Dhanu River in the Godaraghat area of Jagannathpur Union. He died on the spot when lightning struck in the morning.
On the same day, a farmer named Monayem Khan Palan died after being struck by lightning while drying paddy in the haor in front of his house in Satgaon village. Furthermore, in the afternoon, Mo. Shuvo Mondal died in a lightning strike while harvesting paddy in the Chhayar Haor of Krishnapur. His home was in Sirajganj district.
Khaliajuri Police Station OC Mo. Nasir Uddin confirmed that police were sent to the scenes and concluded that the deaths were caused by lightning strikes.
Young Man Dies in Front of His Mother
In Noakhali’s Hatia, a young businessman named Mo. Arafat Hossain (20) died in a lightning strike right before his mother’s eyes. The incident took place around 2:45 PM in Purba Gamshakhali village of Char Ishwar Union.
Arafat was a local cosmetics trader. He had gone to a field near his house with his mother, Shayela Akhter, to collect groundnuts. On their way back home, lightning suddenly struck, killing him on the spot.
UP member Rashed Uddin stated, "The mother was in front and the son was behind her. Suddenly, lightning struck and the boy lost his life right before his mother’s eyes."
Hatiya Police Station OC Kabir Hossain mentioned that police were dispatched to the scene upon receiving the news.
One Death in Habiganj
One person was killed by lightning in the Baniyachong and Nabiganj upazilas of Habiganj. Additionally, two others died in accidents during the storm.
Nabiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mo. Ruhul Amin said, "The family of the deceased Maqsud Mia is poor. Necessary assistance will be arranged for them."
On the previous day, Sunday, 14 people died due to Kalboishakhi storms and lightning across different parts of the country. This included five deaths in Gaibandha, two each in Thakurgaon, Sirajganj, and Jamalpur, and one death each in Panchagarh, Bogra, and Natore.
