Incessant rainfall across the country has triggered floods in Netrokona and Moulvibazar districts, which are expected to persist. Meanwhile, the districts of Habiganj, Sylhet, and Sunamganj remain at high risk of being inundated. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center provided this information on Wednesday.
According to data from the Bangladesh Water Development Board, water levels in four rivers in the country's northeastern region are currently flowing above the danger level. The Someshwari River in Netrokona is flowing 50 cm above the danger mark at the Kalmakanda point. The Kangsha River in the same district is flowing 82 cm above the danger level at the Jariajanjail point. In Moulvibazar, the Manu River is flowing 72 cm above the danger mark, while the Magra River in Netrokona is 2 cm above the danger level.
Furthermore, water levels are dangerously close to the limit at the Atpara point of the Magra River, the Habiganj and Ballah points of the Khowai River, the Sutang-RB point of the Sutang River, and the Juri Silghat point of the Juri River.
Earlier, the situation report and forecast for the northeastern haor basin indicated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over the next three days (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday).
The forecast also noted that water levels in the Surma-Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj; the Manu-Khowai in Moulvibazar and Habiganj; and the Dhanu-Baulai and Bhogai-Kangsha rivers in Netrokona and Kishoreganj may rise rapidly over the next three days. During this period, these rivers and their main tributaries could flow above their pre-monsoon danger levels, potentially flooding low-lying areas adjacent to the rivers in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, and Netrokona.
Meanwhile, the weather forecast for the next 120 hours, starting from 9:00 AM Wednesday, suggests that the ongoing rain or thunder showers across most parts of the country is likely to continue.
