After the Eid-ul-Adha holidays, Dhaka’s kitchen markets have started returning to normal operations. However, just as the festive mood has faded, prices of Sonali chicken and several essential vegetables have increased in the capital.
This picture was observed yesterday (Thursday) after visiting kitchen markets in Karwan Bazar, Mohakhali Kacha Bazar, and Hatirpool.
Market visits showed that Sonali chicken, which was sold at tk 340 per kg before Eid, has increased by tk 40 and is now being sold at tk 380 per kg.
However, broiler chicken prices remain unchanged. Broiler chicken is being sold at tk 190 per kg. Layer chicken is also being sold at around tk 400 per kg.
Vegetable prices have also risen sharply after Eid. At Hatirpool market, green chilies were sold at tk 200 per kg yesterday, up from tk 160 before Eid. The price of raw papaya has also increased, now selling at tk 80–100 per kg compared to tk 70–80 earlier.
Other vegetables include tomatoes at tk 140 per kg, sponge gourd at tk 80, bitter gourd at tk 70–80, round eggplant at tk 80, and long eggplant at tk 100 per kg. Snake gourd is being sold at tk 80–100 per kg.
In contrast, some vegetables are relatively cheaper. Pointed gourd is selling at tk 60 per kg, bottle gourd at tk 50–60 per piece, and lemons at tk 20 per four pieces.
Meanwhile, due to the lingering effect of Eid, fish markets were almost empty of customers. Many fish stalls remained closed due to the lack of buyers.
According to the limited number of open shops, large-sized rohu fish is selling at tk 450 per kg, while smaller rohu is priced at tk 350–380 per kg.
Large tengra fish is selling at tk 650 per kg, and medium-sized tengra at tk 500–550 per kg. In addition, pangas and tilapia fish prices have increased to tk 220–250 per kg.
