A dispute over a World Cup football match escalated into violence, killing a BNP leader and injuring another in Adabor, Dhaka.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mohammadpur Zone Jewel Rana confirmed the matter. The attack occurred around 8:30 pm on Wednesday.
The deceased, Badsha Mia, was the general secretary of the Nobodoy Housing Unit BNP. Saddam Hossain, the president of the same unit, was also injured.
Police said that a fight broke out Monday during the Brazil vs. Japan match. Saddam and Badsha represented one side, while locals Ripon and Parvez led the opposing side.
To resolve the conflict, both parties attended an arbitration meeting. When the meeting failed to reach a resolution, Saddam and Badsha left. Attackers then ambushed them with sharp weapons, inflicting critical wounds.
The victims were initially taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Badsha was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced treatment, where a doctor declared him dead.
Jewel said that an operation is underway.
