State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed has said that comments made by a defeated candidate in West Bengal regarding the killing of Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi are not a matter of concern for Bangladesh. She said that the Bangladesh government remains committed to ensuring justice in the Hadi murder case.
She made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday morning.
Her comments came after former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reportedly claimed that she was instructed by Indian Home Minister Amit Shah to remain silent regarding the arrest of suspects in Bangladesh in connection with a major murder case from the previous year, following her electoral defeat to the BJP.
Banerjee made the allegation during a protest rally held on Tuesday at Dharmatala’s “Y Channel” area in Kolkata, where she strongly criticized both the BJP-led state and central governments. A video of her speech, widely circulated in Indian media, quickly went viral on social media, triggering discussions in Bangladesh as well.
Shama Obaed also noted that the election of Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman as President of the UN General Assembly is a significant achievement for the country’s diplomacy and democratic standing.
She thanked the Foreign Minister, as well as officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for their efforts, adding that this success also reflects continuity in the foreign policy approach of the BNP.
