Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee made a series of explosive remarks against the BJP government on Tuesday while staging a sit-in protest at the Dharmatala–Rani Rashmoni Road area in Kolkata. However, the most discussed part of her speech was her comments on the widely talked-about murder in Bangladesh.
From the stage, Mamata claimed that those accused in the sensational Hadi killing in Bangladesh entered West Bengal through the Meghalaya border. She said they were later arrested by the West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF). According to her, after those arrests, Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally called her and requested that the matter not be made public.
Mamata said, “There was a major murder in Bangladesh. I know who carried it out and who was involved. But in the interest of the country, and because I care about Bangladesh, I am not revealing those names.”
She further claimed that if details of the incident were made public, it could trigger massive political upheaval in Bangladesh.
Sharif Osman Hadi was critically injured after being shot by masked gunmen during a campaign event in Dhaka on December 12 last year. He was later taken to Singapore for treatment, where he died on December 18.
Following the killing, widespread protests erupted across Bangladesh. Public anger against India increased, and tensions emerged in Dhaka–New Delhi relations. The murder sparked intense political debate in Bangladesh and led to a strain in India–Bangladesh relations.
