Christopher Nolan praises Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy

Christopher Nolan is one of the most influential and talented directors in world cinema. He has delivered timeless films such as Oppenheimer, Interstellar, Inception, and The Dark Knight. The

Oscar-winning director has now expressed high praise for India’s renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray and his world-famous “Apu Trilogy”.

Nolan shared his experience of how deeply moved he was after watching the 1955 landmark of Bengali cinema, Pather Panchali. During a visit to the famous online archive “Criterion Closet” in New York, Nolan picked up Satyajit Ray’s “Apu Trilogy” in a video message.

In the video, he said, “Pather Panchali is the first movie of the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, one of India’s greatest filmmakers. It is truly an incredible creation! After watching the movie, I was completely stunned and fascinated.”

At the same time, Nolan revealed that although he has seen Pather Panchali, he has not yet had the opportunity to watch the other two installments of the trilogy, Aparajito and The World of Apu. He is very eager to complete Apu’s life story by watching the rest of the trilogy.

Nolan’s remarks come at a time when he recently visited India to promote his new film The Odyssey. Producer Emma Thomas and Hollywood stars Matt Damon and Tom Holland accompanied Nolan during the promotion of the film, which was released worldwide on 17 July.

At a press conference in Mumbai, Nolan said, “The way the Indian audience loves and appreciates cinema is not seen anywhere else in the world. I have a special attraction toward the film culture here.”

This is not the first time he has shown his appreciation; previously, out of his love for India, the director filmed parts of his blockbuster Tenet in Mumbai and significant scenes of The Dark Knight Rises at the historic Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur.
