Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman alleged on Friday that the government is attempting to establish a one-party ruling system in the country.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at the Narayanganj Central Eidgah on Friday.
Shafiqur added that a trend toward single-party rule is evident in the appointment of the Central Bank governor, control over various banks, the appointment of university vice-chancellors (VCs), and the appointment of administrators to district councils.
He said, “BaKSAL was established during Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s time. If an attempt is made to establish one-party rule in the country again, the people will never accept it.”
Shafiqur criticized the government regarding the implementation of a referendum, noting that while the Prime Minister spoke of a referendum before the election, the subsequent public mandate was denied.
He asserted, “Ignoring the dead, injured, and crippled in connection with the events of July uprising would be equivalent to betrayal.”
Shafiqur also directed criticism toward the home minister, suggesting he interferes in all ministries and makes various comments in Parliament.
He alleged that the government neglects opposition leaders in Parliament, mirroring behaviors of the former Sheikh Hasina government.
Regarding the national budget, Shafiqur stated that while announcing a large budget is the government’s duty, implementation rests with them. He accused the Awami League and its associates of embezzling massive sums of money over the last 15 and a half years.
Turning to local concerns, he said that Narayanganj, once an industrial hub, has transformed into a “city of terror”.
Shafiqur added that justice for the Taqi murder remains unserved and that businessmen live in fear of extortion.
During the event, he announced Maulana Abdul Jabbar, the ameer of Narayanganj City Jamaat, as the party’s candidate for the upcoming Narayanganj City Corporation election.
The meeting was presided over by Maulana Abdul Jabbar and moderated by General Secretary Engineer Monowar Hossain. Other attendees included Central Executive Council Member Saiful Alam Khan Milon, Dhaka City South Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, Assistant Secretary Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Islami Chhatrashibir President Nurul Islam Saddam, Central Working Council Member Maulana Moinuddin Ahmad, DUCSU VP Shadik Kayem, and Narayanganj District Ameer Md Mominul Haque Sarkar.
