Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee said 20,000 kilometers of canals across the country will be re-excavated over the next five years and a program to plant 25 crore trees is also ongoing.

He made these remarks as the chief guest on Friday morning after releasing fish fry into the Rahmatkhali Canal in Lakshmipur. Anee added, “Various programs, including canal re-excavation, tree plantation, and fish fry release, are being implemented. Through these initiatives, importance is being given to the development of the rural economy and environment.”

Describing the Rahmatkhali Canal as the lifeline of Lakshmipur, Anee noted that work to keep the canal clean is underway and water hyacinths in the canal have been cleared, restoring the active water flow. Under the initiative of the district fisheries department, fish fry was distributed for release into the ponds of 33 public and private institutions.

Anee said, “We have taken up a new program to complete the unfinished work of Khaleda Zia. If we all prioritize these tasks regardless of party affiliation, we will be able to boost the rural economy through economic transformation.”

He added, “The people of Bangladesh live on fish and rice, and this is a riverine country. Taking everything together, we will be able to strengthen our own position. Keeping the target point of building a self-reliant Bangladesh in sight, we have continued these tasks.”

Anee noted that priority is being given to the development of rural infrastructure and the environment, emphasizing local community involvement across all programs.

Deputy Commissioner SM Mehdi Hasan, District Superintendent of Police Md Abu Tarek, Executive Engineer of District Water Development Board Nahid Uz-Zaman Khan, District Fisheries Officer Jasim Uddin, Joint Convenor of District BNP Hasibur Rahman, and BFF Vice President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy were present among others.
