A former Awami League leader becoming a Member of Parliament for the BNP—if such an event were to occur, it would certainly be a cause for great astonishment.
The nomination of Subarna Sikder (Thakur)—a member of the Shridham Orakandi Thakur family in Kashiani, Gopalganj, and a leader of the Kashiani Upazila Awami League—as a candidate for a reserved seat from the BNP has sparked intense controversy throughout the district.
On one hand, BNP activists are expressing disbelief, anger, and frustration. On the other hand, those associated with the Awami League have pointed to this nomination as evidence of the BNP's political bankruptcy.
Using social media, individuals from both the BNP and Awami League are posting various comments and photos, raising a flurry of questions. Shariful Islam Roman, a former leader of the Gopalganj District Chhatra Dal, expressed his disappointment and sorrow on social media, asking: "I am frustrated! What was the point of our sisters being on the streets for so long if a leader of the Awami League is given a BNP nomination for a reserved seat?"
"Did she even resign from the Awami League or become a member of the BNP?" Roman added.
Another individual, Tito Baidya, alleged: "She has not officially resigned anywhere. If a position-holding leader of the Awami League can become an MP in two days without any sacrifice or labor, then this can be called nothing but the BNP's destitution."
According to sources from the Kashiani Upazila Awami League, the triennial conference of the unit was held on November 30, 2022. The full committee list was published on January 1 of the following year. Subarna Thakur's name appears at number 27 on that list as the Secretary of Forest and Environment, signed by GM Sahabuddin Azam, the General Secretary of Gopalganj District Awami League.
Attempts were made to contact Subarna Sikder (Thakur) via her mobile phone for a comment on the matter, but she did not answer.
Subarna is a woman from the Matua community. She is a member of the Orakandi Harichand Thakur family and a teacher by profession.
