Colombia cemented their status as FIFA World Cup 2026 dark horses by securing controlled 1-0 Round of 32 victory against Ghana at Kansas City Stadium.
Following their Group K dominance, Nestor Lorenzo’s side proved too formidable for the Black Stars, setting up a high-stakes clash with Switzerland.
The match began with early pressure from Ghana as Thomas Partey unleashed a powerful long-range effort within the first two minutes. However, Colombia soon seized the initiative, fueled by a passionate sea of Colombian supporters.
The breakthrough arrived in the 14th minute when Luis Suarez, who entered the game for the injured Jhon Cordoba, burst down the right flank. Suarez squared a precise ball into the penalty area for Jhon Arias, who caressed a clinical first-time finish into the bottom corner.
Colombia nearly doubled their lead before the break, but Luis Diaz fired wide and Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi produced a spectacular reaction save to deny Johan Mojica’s downward header.
In the 56th minute, officials disallowed a Diaz goal for a marginal offside. Despite the missed chances, Colombia’s defense remained resolute, preventing Ghana from recording any shots on target.
Lorenzo’s men now prepare for their 7 July showdown in Vancouver.
