The Netherlands cruised into the World Cup knockout stage as Group F winners with a commanding 3-1 victory over Tunisia on Thursday, setting up a Round of 32 clash against Morocco.
The Dutch finished atop the group after Japan was held to a 1-1 draw by Sweden, allowing the Netherlands to advance with seven points. Japan finished second and will face Brazil in the knockout round.
The Netherlands wasted little time taking control. Tunisia captain Ellys Skhiri accidentally turned Denzel Dumfries' cross into his own net in the opening minutes. Brian Brobbey doubled the lead in the seventh minute, heading home after Virgil van Dijk flicked on a free kick for his third goal of the tournament.
Tunisia briefly cut the deficit in the 54th minute when Hazem Mastouri converted a corner kick. But the Dutch restored their two-goal advantage eight minutes later as Jan Paul van Hecke's header deflected off Anis Slimane for Tunisia's second own goal of the match.
The Netherlands comfortably saw out the victory despite heavy rain at Arrowhead Stadium, carrying strong momentum into the knockout stage after following a 5-1 rout of Sweden with another convincing performance.
Tunisia, already eliminated before kickoff, ended a disappointing campaign without a victory. The team finished with three straight losses after opening the tournament with a coaching change and internal turmoil, extending its winless streak to six matches.
