OpenAI has secured $11 billion in new funding as part of an investment round that values the artificial intelligence company at $1.25 trillion, a source familiar with the matter said on Friday.
The amount raised so far represents only a portion of the company’s original fundraising target of up to $30 billion. Its current valuation has also fallen from the $1.5 trillion it initially sought, according to two investors.
SoftBank and MGX participated in the funding, the investors said. Bloomberg News first reported the development on Friday.
The funding comes amid a cooling of investor sentiment toward artificial intelligence companies over the past month. Investors have also lowered their expectations for the valuation of rival AI company Anthropic ahead of its planned initial public offering (IPO).
Anthropic’s potential IPO valuation is now estimated at around $1.5 trillion, below earlier expectations of approximately $2 trillion.
Despite the changing investment climate, OpenAI’s latest funding round reflects continued interest from major investors in the artificial intelligence sector. However, the gap between its initial fundraising target and the amount secured so far highlights the challenges facing large-scale AI investments.
