Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury has been appointed as the country’s 29th foreign secretary. A notification was issued on Sunday appointing him to the post.

He succeeds Asad Alam Siam as foreign secretary. A farewell ceremony for Asad Alam Siam was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday. Salahuddin Noman was introduced at the event.

Asad Alam Siam was appointed foreign secretary on June 20, 2025, by the then interim government. In September, it was confirmed that he would become Bangladesh’s next high commissioner to New Delhi.

Meanwhile, the government has already brought Salahuddin Noman back to headquarters. He had been serving as Bangladesh’s permanent representative to the United Nations since January 2025.

The diplomat also accompanied Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during his visit to Japan.

Before taking up the role of permanent representative to the United Nations, Salahuddin Noman served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to Nepal. He had held the position since November 11, 2020.

Joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1998, the diplomat is a 17th batch officer of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs) cadre. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

Before his appointment as ambassador to Nepal, he served at Bangladesh’s high commissions in New Delhi and Islamabad, the Bangladesh Consulate in New York and Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

He also has experience working in various positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including in the Administration, External Publicity, Multilateral Economic Affairs, Protocol, United Nations and Southeast Asia divisions, as well as at the Foreign Service Academy.
