Zaheer Alvi granted bail

The High Court has granted bail to television actor Zaheer Alvi, also known as Md. Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, in a case filed over allegations of abetting the suicide of his wife, Afra Ibnat Ikra. As a result, there is no legal obstacle to his release from prison.

The order was issued on Sunday by the High Court bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher. Senior lawyer Zainul Abedin represented Zaheer Alvi during the bail hearing before the court.

On June 18, Zaheer Alvi surrendered before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin through his lawyer and sought bail. After the hearing, the court rejected his bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.

Later, on June 21, the investigating officer in the case sought a seven-day remand for Zaheer Alvi in the interest of a fair investigation. On June 24, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al Biruni Mir granted a two-day remand after a hearing.

According to the case statement, on February 28, Afra Ibnat Ikra, the wife of Zaheer Alvi, was found hanging at their residence in the Mirpur DOHS area of the capital. She was later taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

The following day, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station in the capital. The complaint alleges that Ikra was driven to suicide because of long standing family disputes and various forms of mental abuse.

Zaheer Alvi and Afra Ibnat Ikra were married in 2010. They have one son.
