Radical reform of electoral system needed: Speaker

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad said a radical reform of the electoral system is needed.

He said, “Those who are not immensely wealthy, but have acceptance in society, should be given the opportunity to contest elections. For this, the Election Commission (EC) must determine a system so that people get the opportunity to participate in elections.”

Hafiz made these remarks on Thursday morning following a meeting with district administrative officials at the Bhola Circuit House.

He added, “Based on the actions of the ousted Awami League government, I said they created such an environment that it was not possible for honest, neutral, and good people of society to participate in elections. It has not been even a year for the government. The interim government should also have taken steps regarding this issue. I have not seen sufficient initiative from them.”

Hafiz noted, “From the statements of those in the government, what I can understand is that local government elections will be fair and neutral. Local government elections - since this is the lowest level, it is a very important level. I hope the elections will be held in a fair and neutral manner.”

Regarding Sheikh Hasina’s return to the country, the speaker said based on his political experience, he feels there is no possibility of Hasina returning even in the next 10 years.
