Police have detained a man for beating his wife after she prevented him from watching the World Cup football final in Ramganj, Lakshmipur.
Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Firoz Uddin Chowdhury confirmed the matter. The incident came to light after a video of the torture went viral on the social media platform Facebook on Sunday.
Following this, police went to Kanchanpur Union on Monday and detained the individual, identified as Johirul Islam.
The victim, Morium Begum, alleged that she was home alone with their five-month-old child and therefore asked her husband not to leave to watch the match. Enraged, Johirul allegedly beat her and she sustained serious injuries.
A two-minute video of the incident shows Morium Begum crying loudly, with visible marks of injury on her body.
Locals alleged that Johirul often tortured his wife and reportedly used drugs at the time of the incident, though police have not officially confirmed these claims.
OC Firoz told Agamir Somoy, “We did not receive written complaint yet. However, Johirul was detained after the video came to our notice. Legal action is taken against him.”
