“If we fear criticism, how will we correct ourselves? Criticism creates the opportunity for correction,” said Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu.
Addressing journalists, he said, “As soon as news reaches you, do not publish it without immediate verification and scrutiny. The more you verify, the more important the news becomes to the public. You are the mirror of society.”
“I was a journalist during my student life. I worked at two newspapers. I used to write major feature stories at that time. But over time, due to workload, I could not continue,” the minister added.
He made the remarks on Sunday afternoon at an exchange meeting organized by the Kurigram Press Club.
Earlier, he inaugurated a two-kilometer canal excavation project along the Dasherhat stream in the Holokhana Union of the district headquarters.
At the event, the minister said, “Alongside expanding flood shelters in the haor and northern regions, we will also establish lightning protection shelters by installing lightning protection devices. In the last two to three years, lightning strikes have caused significant loss of life. We will build these shelters in those areas and install lightning rods to prevent deaths.”
Asadul Habib Dulu added, “Canal excavation programs will bring positive changes to the rural economy. Farmers will be able to use canal water for cultivation during the dry season. It will help expand agricultural activities and support fish farming as well. If trees are planted along both sides of the canals, environmental balance will be maintained and the areas will become more attractive.”
The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Annapurna Debnath. District Council Administrator and District BNP Member Secretary Sohel Hossain Kaykobad, District BNP Convener Mostafizur Rahman, Joint Convener Hasibur Rahman Hasib and Shafiqur Islam Bebus, along with local leaders, also spoke at the event.
