Two children have been killed in separate landslides in Chattogram on Wednesday. The incidents took place at Muktijoddha Hill in Sholoshahar in the city and in the Jungal Salimpur area under Sitakunda police station.
A 10-month-old child, Ashraful Islam Tanvir, was killed in a landslide at a garden house near Khejurtala in Jungal Salimpur on Wednesday morning. The child’s mother was injured in the incident. Tanvir was the son of Mohin Uddin of the area.
Another child, Sumaiya Akter (11), died in a landslide beside Muktijoddha Hill in Mayor Goli of Sholoshahar. The landslide occurred around 1 pm.
Panchlaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jahedul Islam told Agamir Somoy, “A landslide occurred during the rain and fell on the house. The child was injured in the incident. She was later taken to a hospital where doctors declared her dead.”
Meanwhile, around 10 am Wednesday, a section of a hill collapsed onto the house of Mahin Uddin in Jungal Salimpur. At that time, Mahin’s son, Tanvir, who was inside the house, was buried under the debris and critically injured. He was later rescued and taken to a local hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. The child’s mother was also injured in the same incident.
Sitakunda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mahinul Islam said, “A child died in a landslide in Jungal Salimpur this morning. An unnatural death case is being processed in connection with the incident.”
It is worth noting that settlements housing more than 100,000 people have been built in Jungal Salimpur by cutting hills. Most of these settlements are considered risky. Every year, fears of landslides emerge there during the rainy season. Earlier, on Tuesday, two people were killed in hill and wall collapses in Sholoshahar and Rangunia.
