Finance Adviser to the Prime Minister Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir said the government aims to transform the country into a trillion-dollar economy by 2034 and is preparing a roadmap to achieve the target.
He made the remarks on Thursday after the second meeting of the Advisory Committee on Economic Strategy Formulation. The meeting took place at the NEC conference room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital. Former adviser Dr Wahid Uddin Mahmud chaired the meeting, while General Economics Division member (Secretary) Dr Monzur Hossain presented the keynote paper.
Speaking at the meeting, Titumir said the Planning Commission previously had two primary functions. One was to quickly approve projects worth less than Tk 500 million without requiring formal meetings. The other was to act as a rubber stamp in approving projects prepared by ministries. “That will no longer continue. We will strengthen the Planning Commission,” he said.
He also said the government is pursuing practical and accountable politics. According to him, previous development plans contained major flaws, including failures to appoint project directors properly, repeated extensions of project deadlines, and rising costs. “Some projects even required fourth revisions. Incidents like the pillow scandal also took place,” he said.
