Elon Musk is set to become the owner of a dazzling fortune never seen before in the history of human commerce. He is poised to become the world's first trillionaire — the owner of one trillion dollars in assets. The scale of his wealth will be larger than the economies of many countries around the world.
If Elon Musk's space and artificial intelligence-based company, SpaceX, completes its stock market listing (IPO), it could mark the first time in history that an individual's wealth exceeds one trillion dollars.
Currently, as the CEO of Tesla, Musk's wealth, through shares and stock options, stands at approximately $273 billion. If SpaceX's IPO succeeds next week, an additional roughly $841 billion could be added to his fortune.
This is because Musk owns nearly half of SpaceX's shares. The company's potential market value is estimated at $1.77 trillion.
Altogether, Musk's total wealth from Tesla and SpaceX alone could reach approximately $1.11 trillion.
However, the majority of this wealth is not liquid cash. The value of his assets is determined based on the shares and ownership stakes he holds in various companies. Therefore, the actual value of this wealth will depend on how the market valuations of Tesla and SpaceX change in the future.
For a single person, spending this vast amount of money within a lifetime is nearly impossible. Even spending $1 million per hour, it would take more than a century to spend one trillion dollars.
To illustrate the magnitude of Musk's potential wealth, economists point out that only 20 countries in the world have economies larger than $1.1 trillion. In other words, the economy of the majority of countries in the world is smaller than Musk's potential wealth.
According to International Monetary Fund (IMF) data, Taiwan's economy is $977 billion, Ireland's is $779 billion, Sweden's is $760 billion, Singapore's is $660 billion, and Musk's birthplace, South Africa, has an economy of approximately $480 billion.
