Five ships of the Bangladesh Coast Guard have been renamed, with the names of four national leaders dropped. Another ship previously named Joy Bangla has also received a new name.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a circular on Thursday approving the renaming of the ships. It said the proposal to change their names had been approved following a letter from the Coast Guard.
Under the changes, BCGS Joy Bangla has been renamed BCGS Adommo Bangla.
BCGS Syed Nazrul has been renamed BCGS Firoz Kabir. BCGS Tajuddin has been renamed BCGS Nurul Islam. BCGS Mansur Ali will now be known as BCGS M Humayun Kabir. BCGS Kamruzzaman has been renamed BCGS Ashraf Siddiqui.
During the Awami League’s tenure in power, four close associates of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamaruzzaman, were honored by naming Coast Guard ships after them. They were assassinated inside jail on November 3, 1975.
After the fall of the Awami League government following the student and public uprising, the interim government also removed the names of Bangabandhu and several members of his family from various establishments.
