Rampal power plant sets generation record at 1,321 MW

Rampal Power Plant

A new record has been set in electricity generation at the Rampal coal fired thermal power plant in Bagerhat.

The plant generated a maximum of 1,321 megawatts of electricity simultaneously from its two units. This is the highest generation recorded so far. The electricity generated is being supplied directly to the national grid.

At around 4:30 pm on Saturday (October 3), the plant’s first unit generated 656 megawatts while the second unit generated 665 megawatts. Combined generation from the two units marked the plant’s highest electricity generation to date.

Anwarul Azim, general manager and chief human resources officer of the Rampal Thermal Power Plant, confirmed the matter.

He said, “After electricity generation was temporarily suspended due to a mechanical fault, both units of the plant are now generating electricity continuously. The electricity generated is being supplied to the national grid according to demand.”

According to plant sources, an initiative was taken in 2010 to construct the Rampal Thermal Power Plant as a joint venture between Bangladesh and India. Later on, January 29, 2012, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) signed an agreement in this regard. Under the agreement, Bangladesh India Friendship Power Company Limited (BIFPCL) was formed.

The simultaneous generation of 1,321 megawatts of electricity from the two units has been described as a new record for the plant in terms of its power generation capacity.
