Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major Akhtaruzzaman (retd.) has been detained by DB police.

A source in the DB police confirmed that he was detained from his residence in the Cantonment area of the capital at around 5:00 pm Friday (October 2).

Earlier, a case was filed against Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman over allegations of creating disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport over a shortage of luggage trolleys and luggage collection delays. He was also accused of obstructing government duties and physically assaulting an on-duty security official.

Airport security official Md Shahriar Alam Sajib filed the case at the Airport Police Station on Friday. The case was filed under several sections of the Penal Code and is numbered 6.

According to the police based on the case statement, there was heavy passenger pressure at around 10:40 am Thursday when passengers of BG 338 flight arriving from Medina were collecting their luggage. As a result, a shortage of trolleys occurred in the area of luggage belt 8. Passengers were also facing delays in receiving their luggage.

At the request of Dhaka 5 constituency Member of Parliament Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, executive director of the airport, went to the scene. He tried to calm the situation.

The case statement alleges that Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman approached the executive director in an aggressive manner. He allegedly used abusive language and issued threats. He also allegedly made indecent remarks about the Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism.

The situation became more tense when protocol assistants accompanying Akhtaruzzaman began recording videos on mobile phones in the airport’s restricted Key Point Installation (KPI) area. Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin, a security supervisor on duty, prohibited them from recording videos.

According to the case statement, Akhtaruzzaman became angry and verbally abused the security official. At one point, the official was allegedly physically assaulted.

He was also accused of throwing away bottles of Zamzam water collected by general passengers from a trolley and causing damage. He was also accused of behaving aggressively with a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

According to the complainant, these activities obstructed government officials from performing their duties at a restricted and sensitive facility. At the same time, they created a risk of disrupting the airport’s normal discipline and security.

The case was filed under sections 186, 189, 294, 323, 352, 353, 504 and 506 of the Penal Code. These sections concern allegations including obstruction of government duties, causing injury, criminal use of force, intentional insult and criminal intimidation.

Police said relevant CCTV footage, statements from eyewitnesses and other evidence will be collected as part of a proper investigation into the incident. Legal action will be taken afterward.

Before the incident, a video of an argument between Akhtaruzzaman and the airport’s executive director over problems with luggage and passenger services at the airport was made public. Various media outlets have published reports on the matter.

Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman is a former Member of Parliament from the Kishoreganj 2 constituency. He was previously involved in BNP politics. Reports were also published in February 2026 that he had joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
