Seven coaches of the Dhaka bound intercity Jayantika Express became detached after the engine’s hook broke on a hilly slope inside Lawachara National Park in Moulvibazar. A wheel of the rescue train also derailed while it was heading to the site to rescue the affected train.
The coaches of the Jayantika Express became detached at around 1:30 pm Friday. Rail communication between Sylhet and the rest of the country has remained suspended since then.
A wheel of the rescue train derailed at Akhaura in Brahmanbaria. The incident occurred at around 4:30 pm on the Dhaka Chattogram railway line near the yard of Akhaura Railway Station. As a result, rail communication between Dhaka and Chattogram on the down line has been suspended.
Akhaura Railway Station cabin master Mainul Haque said the rescue train left the station yard in the afternoon for Sylhet when one of its wheels derailed. As a result, rail communication between Dhaka and Chattogram on the down line has been suspended. However, efforts are underway to quickly recover the derailed coach and restore train services.
Meanwhile, according to sources at Bhanugach Railway Station in Moulvibazar, the Jayantika Express left Bhanugach Railway Station at 1:06 pm after departing from Sylhet. While climbing a hilly slope inside Lawachara forest, the engine’s hook broke due to excessive pulling force. As a result, the seven coaches at the rear became detached while the engine continued moving forward. Train services on the Sylhet Dhaka and Sylhet Chattogram routes were subsequently suspended.
Passengers have been suffering since the incident. However, a technical team from the railway authorities has reached the site and started work to reconnect the coaches and restore the railway line.
Confirming the incident, Bhanugach Railway Station master Gouraprasad Das Palash said repair work began immediately after receiving the information and hoped that rail communication would be restored soon.
