Measles Outbreak: Death Toll Rises to 451

Twelve more children have died from measles and measles-like symptoms across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, from 8:00 am Thursday to 8:00 am Friday. With these latest deaths, the total number of deaths from measles and related symptoms has reached 451 over the past two months, according to a press release issued on Friday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
According to the release, 1,192 new cases of measles-like symptoms were recorded in the past 24 hours. This brings the total number of patients with measles-like symptoms to 55,611 over the last two months.
In addition, 111 new confirmed measles cases were reported in the past 24 hours. From March 15 to May 15, the total number of confirmed measles cases has reached 7,416.
The DGHS statement also said that 40,176 patients were hospitalized with suspected measles during the two-month period. Of them, 36,055 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals during the same period.
In the past 24 hours, eight deaths were reported among suspected measles cases and four among confirmed cases. Overall, 377 people have died from suspected measles and 74 from confirmed measles over the past two months.
