Five Dead After Being Hit by Bus While Watching Pickup Accident

Five people were killed in a road accident in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur. At least 15 others were injured in the incident. Following the accident, angry locals blocked the Dhaka-Khulna Highway. A bus was also set on fire.
The accident occurred Saturday afternoon in the Soyadi area of Bhanga upazila on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway.
Police and local residents said an egg-laden pickup van overturned on the side of the road in the Soyadi area in the afternoon. Efforts were later underway to recover the vehicle. At that time, a large number of people gathered at the scene.
A Narail Express passenger bus traveling from Dhaka to Khulna then lost control and ran over the people standing there. Four people were killed on the spot. At least 15 others were injured. They were rescued and taken to different hospitals. One of the injured was declared dead by doctors after being taken to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex, raising the death toll to five.
The identities of the dead and injured could not be immediately confirmed.
Following the accident, angry locals blocked the highway and began protesting. They set a bus on fire. The protest was continuing at the time this report was filed.
After receiving the information, members of the police, Highway Police and Fire Service reached the scene and began rescue operations. They were also working to restore normal traffic conditions on the highway.
Officer-in-Charge Md. Abdul Alim of Bhanga Highway Police Station said, “So far, five people have died. The injured have been admitted to different hospitals. Police are working to remove the blockade from the highway.”
