The Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for new voter registration to July 31, ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
The previous deadline was June 30. The extension was confirmed in the EC’s draft roadmap for the local government elections, which is awaiting final approval.
The Election Commission has prepared separate roadmaps for elections to Union Parishads, Upazila Parishads, Municipalities, and City Corporations. The roadmaps are expected to be finalized and officially announced later this month.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud told reporters on Thursday that the registration deadline had been extended from June 30 to July 31.
“If the local government elections are held in October, extending the registration deadline by a month will not create any problems,” he said.
Masud said the EC has prepared a detailed roadmap outlining the timeline for each stage of the election process, including the schedule for finalizing the voter list.
All eligible citizens who register as new voters by July 31 will be included in the final voter list and will be eligible to vote in the upcoming local government elections.
He added that the Election Commission may also need to increase the number of polling stations if necessary based on the expanded voter list.
