Ex-DSCC councilor Sayeed sentenced to 7 years

A court sentenced AKM Mominul Haque Sayeed, former councilor of ward number 9 of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Jubo League leader, to seven years in prison in a corruption case.
Dhaka Special Judge Court-2 Judge Hamidul Islam announced the verdict on Thursday. However, as the accused is fugitive, an arrest warrant along with the sentence has been issued against him.
ACC Prosecutor SM Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the information.
In the verdict, the accused was sentenced to five years in prison for acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income and another two years in prison for criminal misconduct. However, the sentences under the two sections will run at the same time. In that case, he will have to serve a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Along with the imprisonment, a fine of Tk 5,60,33,224 illegally acquired has been imposed. Besides, his blocked Tk 2.93 crore has been confiscated.
On 20 November 2019, ACC Assistant Director Ataur Rahman Sarkar filed the case on charges of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 4,47,66,261. Following the investigation of the case, Ataur submitted the charge sheet to the court on 17 April 2022. Thereafter, charges were framed against the accused and the trial began. During the trial, the court took testimony from 13 witnesses.
It was alleged in the case that he acquired these assets with dishonest intent by abusing his power through various illegal activities, including casinos, which are inconsistent with his known income.
