Jamaat leader jailed in Tk 400 crore embezzlement case

Abdul Wahed (55), a local Jamaat leader, has been arrested at Jamalpur's Madarganj on charges of embezzling Tk 400 crore from clients under the guise of a cooperative society. He was sent to jail through a court on Wednesday.

Abdul Wahed is a director of Al-Akaba Multipurpose Cooperative Society and a former amir (chief) of the upazila Jamaat-e-Islami. Madarganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Snehasish Roy confirmed the information.

He was arrested on Tuesday afternoon from the bypass area of Jamalpur city by RAB-14. Local sources said that in 2025, customers of the society filed a case against the directors at Madarganj Model Police Station, alleging fraud and embezzlement. Along with that case, a total of eight cases have been filed against Abdul Wahed with the police station. He was an accused with multiple arrest warrants in these cases.

The society was registered in 1997.

The complaint states that the cooperative society had 12,661 members. Their total deposits amounted to Tk 391.57 crore It has been learned that Abdul Wahed was expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami after the embezzlement allegations surfaced.
