14 banned Chhatra League leaders and activists sent to jail after remand

Fourteen leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League who were arrested while celebrating Sheikh Hasina’s birthday at the residence of former Barguna 2 constituency MP Md Shaukat Hasanur Rahman Rimon have been sent to jail after completing their remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order after a hearing on Friday, October 2.
The accused are Md Yakub Hossain Rajib, Arafat Mia, Rifat Howladar, Hridoy Hasan, Fahim, Rajib Hossain Rana, Md Firoz, Md Arif, Md Omar Faruk, Abdullah Al Aman, Sohanur Hossain Shahin, Md Hasib, Farzana and Hasib Mia.
On Friday, the accused were produced before the court. Investigation officer of the case and Sub Inspector of Uttara West Police Station Iqbal Hossain requested that they be kept in jail. Lawyers for the accused sought bail for 11 of them. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail pleas and ordered that they be sent to jail.
Earlier, the court granted three days of remand for them on September 29. On the same day, one day of remand was granted for Chhatra League leader Farzana. She was sent to jail after completing her remand on September 30.
According to the case statement, activists of the banned Chhatra League, Jubo League and Swechhasebak League had gathered at the residence of former Barguna 2 constituency MP Shaukat Hasanur Rahman Rimon in Sector 7 under Uttara West Police Station in the capital on September 28. They were allegedly preparing for terrorist activities with the aim of destabilizing the state.
Acting on the information, police conducted a raid at the residence on the afternoon of September 28 and arrested the accused from inside a room. At the time, 20 to 22 unidentified accused fled.
During a search, police seized 20 pages containing the names and biographies of 20 candidates for positions in the Kakchira Union Committee of Patharghata Upazila in Barguna under Swechhasebak League. The pages were found inside a drawer of a table in the room.
A case was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Uttara West Police Station in the capital in connection with the incident.
