The court ordered a one-day remand for Jamaat leader major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order on Saturday following a hearing.

Authorities placed Akhtaruzzaman on remand in a case filed over creating chaos over luggage and trolley at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, obstructing government duty, and physically assaulting an on-duty security officer.

Police arrested Akhtaruzzaman from his residence in Dhaka’s Cantonment area around 5pm on Friday.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), there were many passengers arriving on Flight BG-338 from Medina at 10:40 am on Thursday. Due to this, a trolley crisis occurred luggage was also being delayed.

At the time, responding to a call from MP for the Dhaka-5 Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad went to the scene and attempted to calm the situation.

The FIR alleges that Akhtaruzzaman verbally abused Ragib and issued threats. The situation escalated when protocol assistants accompanying Akhtaruzzaman began recording mobile phone video in the airport’s restricted key point installation (KPI) area, prompting on-duty Security Supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin to forbid them from video recording.

Enraged by this, Akhtaruzzaman verbally abused the security official, and at one point, physically assaulted him. There are allegations that he caused damage by throwing bottles of Zamzam water collected by passengers off a trolley.

Police said CCTV footage, witness testimonies, and other evidence will be collected for a proper investigation, after which legal action will be taken.

Prior to the incident, a video showing an altercation between Akhtaruzzaman and Ragib regarding luggage and passenger service suffering at the airport had surfaced, with reports being published in various news media.

Akhtaruzzaman is a former MP from the Kishoreganj-2 constituency. He was previously associated with BNP, and reports were also published regarding his joining Jamaat-e-Islami in February 2026.
