Two Men Sentenced to Life in Prison for Rape Case in Tangail

A court in Tangail on Tuesday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for their roles in a gang rape case and handed a third defendant a 15-year prison term.
The convicts sentenced to life are Shafiqul Islam Shafi of Kamaria village in Muktagacha upazila of Mymensingh and Shamchul Haque Shamchu of the same area. The third convict, Abdur Rahim of Kotar Bari village in Jamalpur Sadar upazila, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
In addition to the life sentences, the court fined Shafi and Shamchu Tk 100,000 each. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional two years of simple imprisonment. Rahim was fined Tk 20,000, with an additional six months in prison if the fine is not paid.
The verdict was delivered Tuesday afternoon by Judge A.N.M. Ilias of the Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. All three convicts were present in court when the judgment was announced.
According to the case statement, the survivor is a resident of Jamalpur Sadar upazila. On June 22, 2023, the three men took her to an isolated house in the Dhokla area of the Madhupur forest in Tangail, where they raped her throughout the night.
The survivor filed a case with Madhupur Police Station four days after the incident.
Following the investigation, Sub-Inspector Abdus Sattar of Madhupur Police Station submitted the charge sheet against the three accused. The court formally framed charges on Dec. 24, 2023.
After examining testimony from seven prosecution witnesses, the tribunal delivered its verdict on Tuesday.
