The High Court has granted bail to Jamaat leader and former MP (retd.) Major Akhtaruzzaman in a case filed over obstructing public works and misbehaving with officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

A High Court bench led by Justice K M Zahid Sarwar passed the order on Sunday (November 1) after hearing his bail petition.

Senior lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir argued for the bail petition in court.

Earlier, on October 4, Major Akhtaruzzaman was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court after remand, and a bail petition was filed. The court later rejected his bail petition after hearing and ordered him sent to jail. His lawyers then filed a bail petition with the High Court.

On October 2, Akhtaruzzaman was arrested on allegations of creating chaos over luggage claim and shortages of trolleys at Shahjalal Airport, obstructing government work, and physically assaulting an on-duty security official. Airport security official Md. Shahriar Alam Sajib filed a case with the Airport Police Station in this connection.

After the arrest, the case's investigating officer sought five days' remand for Akhtaruzzaman. After the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Alburuni Mir granted one day's remand.

The case's complaint said that on October 1, 34 representatives of Jamaat-e-Islami returned to Dhaka from Medina with their family members. The flight carrying them landed at Dhaka Airport at 8:55 am. After immigration, the passengers went to the No. 8 belt area to collect their luggage.

The First Information Report (FIR) further states that due to heavy passenger pressure at the time, there was a temporary shortage of trolleys and long lines formed. In this situation, some protocol assistants were alleged to have tried to take trolleys without following the queue rules.

The case also mentions that some passengers became agitated over the delay in getting luggage and not receiving Zamzam water, and behaved improperly. The case filed in this connection includes allegations under several sections of the Penal Code.
