Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Saint Petersburg on Monday. During the meeting, Putin expressed his hope that the Iranian people would overcome these "difficult times" and that peace would be established soon.
Following attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel, Russia has offered to mediate to reduce tensions in the Middle East. Additionally, to help de-escalate the situation, Russia has repeatedly proposed storing Iran's enriched uranium, though the United States has not accepted this offer.
Putin told Araghchi, "We will do everything on our part to protect the interests of Iran and all the people of the region, and to ensure peace as quickly as possible."
He added, "Last week, I received a message from Iran's Supreme Leader. I request you to convey my sincere gratitude to him and assure him that Russia intends to maintain this strategic relationship."
Last year, Iran and Russia signed a 20-year strategic partnership agreement. Russia is currently constructing two new units at Bushehr, Iran's only nuclear power plant. Furthermore, Iran has supplied Shahed drones to Russia for use in the Ukraine war.
On the other hand, Araghchi stated that the Russia-Iran relationship will grow even stronger. He also thanked Putin for Moscow's continued support.
