Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 15 years in sexual assault case

Harvey Weinstein, the once highly influential Hollywood producer and co-founder of Miramax Studios, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by a New York court for sexually assaulting a former assistant in 2006.

On September 23, after six years of legal proceedings, New York Judge Curtis Farber announced the sentence for the 74-year-old former movie mogul.

Weinstein was found guilty in June 2025 at a retrial over allegations that he sexually assaulted production assistant Miriam Haley at his Manhattan apartment in 2006.

Earlier, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison in the same case in 2020. However, New York’s highest court overturned the conviction in 2024, saying the trial had not been conducted fairly.

The new sentence was announced after Weinstein was found guilty again at a retrial in 2025.

After the sentence was announced, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg praised victim Miriam Haley’s courage and thanked her.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Weinstein said that Weinstein considers himself innocent and completely disagrees with the court’s decision.

More than 100 women and well-known actresses had come forward with allegations against the influential Hollywood producer. The proceedings in his case helped spark the historic #MeToo movement worldwide, which created a global movement against sexual abuse of women.

Apart from the New York case, Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2022 in a separate rape and sexual assault case in California.
